Das Spiel mit der bairischen Kultur ist gewollt. Die japanischen Architekten wollen bei ihrem Streifzug festgestellt haben, dass das Münchner Stadtbild vor allem durch Erker geprägt ist. Das Modell, das sie danach entwickelten, hatte dann im Erdgeschoss eine Menge bogenförmiger Öffnungen, darüber an beinahe jedem zweiten Fenster einen Erker.

Es stieß auf Begeisterung bei der Stadtverwaltung, Traditionsbewahrer konnten allerdings eine bayerische Herkunft nicht unbedingt erkennen: Der damalige Stadtheimatpfleger Gert Goergens bezeichnete das Modell als “Karikatur der Münchner Stadtgeschichte”. Die Erker stellten sich für ihn eher als “Spielmotiv” dar, bestenfalls Dekoration, keine Hommage an den Münchner Baustil. Die Stadt genehmigte den Bau dann nur abgespeckt und geglättet.

The play with Bavarian culture is intentional. During their foray, the Japanese architects claim to have noticed that Munich’s cityscape is characterized primarily by bay windows. The model they then developed had a lot of arched openings on the first floor and an oriel above it at almost every second window.

It met with enthusiasm from the city council, but preservationists could not necessarily recognize a Bavarian origin: Gert Goergens, the city’s curator of local history at the time, described the model as a „caricature of Munich’s city history.“ For him, the oriels appeared more as a „play motif,“ at best decoration, not a homage to Munich’s architectural style. The city then approved the building only slimmed down and smoothed out.
